DESTINATION: BIG SAND LAKE LODGE: The paradise they call Big Sand Lake
Running a wilderness lodge
Comments from past guest of Big Sand Lake Lodge
First of all, Tom and I can't thank you, and all of the staff, enough for the ultimate trip and moose hunt. We
experienced more than we had ever thought possible and got more than we had bargained for. Your staff and guides
are exceptional. I just had a "Hoot" with Edwin. After I got my moose and we spent the days fishing, we had one
laugh after the other. We got along just great. Your hospitality and facilities can't be beat.
I took my moose to the taxidermist the day after I got home. He agreed with me that I should get it scored. He
thinks it will make B&C. He helped me locate three official scorers, and I contacted all of them. However, none
of them will score it until after the official drying period of sixty days.

What an incredible time we had. I think it took us 6 minutes to catch our first fish. My first time to Big Sand
Lake Lodge is now full of memories of Big Pike and lots of them. Our guide Dwight was great and I will ask for him
on my return visit. Among other things I watched him build and start a fire in the middle of a rain storm! A trip
to Big Sand Lake is not just a vacation, it is more of an adventure. The accommodations, staff, shore lunches,
scenery, and fishing left a solid imprint on my memory that will always remind me of the great time we had. Waking
up in the morning to a knock on our door to some of the best coffee I have ever tasted, accompanied by cool
mornings, and the anticipation of those big Northern Pike still brings a smile to my face. Although Big Sand Lake
and its surrounding waters offer numerous species to catch, I was here for Pike. The Northern Pike of Big Sand
Lake are some of the most powerful Pike that I have caught anywhere. When you catch 50 to 100 fish a day as we
did, mixed in with several of them that reached Master Angler Status that is a trip worth remembering, and a story
worth telling. Thank you to everyone at Big Sand Lake Lodge.

Big on Big Sand
Being a fisherman my whole life and having served as the Tourism and Travel Advertising Director at In-Fisherman
Communications for the past five plus years, I’ve had the opportunity to experience some of the best fishing
destinations in the world. My most recent trip was to Big Sand Lake Lodge this past July.
Accompanied by clients from Travel Manitoba, we were looking to capture photos for the magazine and hopefully
upgrade my personal best Master Angler at some point during the trip. My personal best Pike was quickly replaced
the first morning—a 46-incher. Throughout the rest of our trip, many Master Angler fish were caught and recorded
by Big Sand guests. Evenings were spent relaxing and sharing Polaroid shots and fish stories at the lodge.
By the end of our trip, our group landed several Master Anglers. Personally, set two personal bests—one being a
Pike and the other a Lake Trout I caught on a fly-out to Morand Lake. Our group also caught four other Master
Angler Trout that day.
Along with fishing Pike and Trout, we enjoyed some of the best walleye action casting jig and plastic and Rapala
minnow baits. Walleyes in the 18 to 25-inch range were common, with a few over 28-inches.
I’ve come to the obvious conclusion that everything is BIG at Big Sand. From the fish to the meals they serve,
it’s obvious that the staff’s goal is to serve and satisfy every individual that visits Big Sand Lake Lodge. It
was my first visit to Big Sand but it won’t be my last and I’ve already encouraged many In-Fisherman staffers to
take advantage of the great fishing and hospitality.
Many thanks to Rick Bohna, our excellent hard working guide Orson & Gary and all the staff at the lodge for a trip
that rates 5+ stars.

A Resort that will never be forgotten !!
Dear Rick,
Perfect! I just wanted to let you know what an amazing experience we had to say the least! Between the two of us
we caught 9 "TROPHY" Lake Trout in 4 days. With all of the fish we caught, we both had soar arms! Jerry and I
haven't stopped talking about the trip. We just had such a wonderful time and it was everything you said it would
be and more! We took a ton of pictures and a lot of the people we have shared them with are talking about a trip.
Our guide Louie was so good and he has such a passion for fishing that it's amazing! We learned a lot of new
techniques from him also. We have a lot of wonderful memories from the resort that will never be forgotten and we
thank you for that. Big Sand Lake Lodge overall is in a class of its own! We will highly recommend your resort to
anyone. We will be back. Hope to see you again soon and Thanks again for the lasting memories.

Dear Rick,
This year marked my third trip to Big Sand. I was accompanied by my son-in law, Clem Welsh, who wanted to fish for
big pike with a fly rod. We had a wonderful experience. Clem was able to experience the excellent fishing that
BSL Lodge offers and "caught the biggest fish I have ever caught on a fly rod." The guide was excellent and the
staff at the lodge first rate.
Thanks for a memorable trip.

Your staff was very pleasant and attentive, Orson is not only an excellant guide but
has a great personality too, we definately want him again next year.

Rick, although we had the late ice on the lake, which effected the fishing, we still
had a very nice 8 days at your lodge and would highly recommend our guide Eric, he had
a great amount of influence on our great stay, he was super!

Big Sand Lake was a blast! I came up with my dad and I’m looking forward to coming
back next year. I hope that my guide will be Shane or Dwight. The guides were very
nice and helped us out with a lot of things. The staff & workers were also very nice.
I guess you guys knew that I liked hot chocolate.

Excellent fishing, great weather, very satisfying, relaxing trip. We had great food
and plenty of it! The Seal River trip for Arctic grayling was great too!

I have travelled to Northern Canada for years to many fishing lodges, I think the
accomodations, staff and guides are the BEST I have ever had! Keep up the good work

Everyone was extremely cordial and helpful to all of our needs. The walleye fishing,
well it’s a Walleye factory !! The Northern Pike were excellent. We had a very good
time and would recommend to others.

We have come to Canada and Alaska for the last 18 years and go to different Lodge each
time because we enjoy variety and like to see different areas, Big Sand’s variety
rivals the best of them and we would highly recommend the facility.

Big Sand for the 2 nd time has exceeded my expectations of a fishing lodge/trip.
Everyone is concerned that things go well for the guests. We experienced a bad morning
( weather ) on a fly out but the guide, pilot and yourself all went the extra mile to
give us additional time fishing to make up for lost time in the morning. Rick, Thank
you so very much.
J. Warren, MO.
Everything exceeded my expectations, if someone wanted to make a movie about a fishing
lodge, they would not have to change the cast at Big Sand Lake.
